Proton Drive delivers unmatched privacy and robust file versioning, but its slow synchronization and immature ecosystem features leave demanding users frustrated.
Get this if privacy is your absolute top priority and you already use the Proton ecosystem, but skip it if you need fast synchronization and advanced collaboration tools.
Owners consistently praise Proton Drive for its uncompromising stance on privacy and security, leveraging end-to-end encryption for all files, including filenames and folder names. Subscribers value the inclusion of the service within the broader Proton Unlimited ecosystem alongside mail, VPN, and password management, while the generous file versioning of up to 200 versions for 10 years provides strong protection against data loss.
However, long-term experience reveals significant friction points. Owners frequently report frustratingly slow synchronization and transfer speeds, particularly with large numbers of small files or large media uploads, due to client-side encryption overhead. The mobile and desktop applications lag behind mainstream competitors in essential functionality: the mobile app lacks a built-in search function, photo backups are barebones and extremely slow, and productivity tools like Proton Docs and Calc are considered practically useless by daily users.
Beyond performance limitations, owners highlight recurring software bugs, including login issues, lack of detailed storage breakdown management, and critical Windows desktop app flaws such as file corruption and name clash errors. While customer support is generally responsive and the interface remains clean, many long-term users experience feature fatigue as unfinished additions pile up without adequate refinement of core functionality.

"What's the point of storing hundreds or thousands of files in the cloud if I can't even search for them on my phone?"
After 6–12 Months
Over months of daily use, owners note that while data security feels rock-solid, the accumulation of unfinished features and slow sync speeds creates ongoing friction, leading some to experience bug-reporting fatigue.
Best for
Privacy-conscious individuals already invested in the Proton ecosystem who prioritize zero-knowledge security over advanced office collaboration.
Not for
Power users who require fast synchronization, robust mobile file search, photo backup, and advanced office suite integration.
