World-class armrest adjustability and solid build quality are offset by a surprisingly firm seat cushion and a finicky headrest.
Buy this for the world-class adjustable armrests, not for a soft seat cushion. Pass if you need cool mesh breathability or suffer from tailbone pain.
Owners consistently highlight the Steelcase Gesture's armrests as its strongest feature, offering unmatched range of motion for typing, gaming, and shifting sitting positions throughout the day. The overall frame is heavy, stable, and built to last, supported by Steelcase's responsive warranty service that replaces damaged parts without hassle.
However, sitting comfort divides the community sharply. The seat cushion and back padding are noticeably firm and relatively thin, with many owners experiencing tailbone aching, leg numbness, or discomfort during extended sessions. The fabric and foam padding also retain heat, making the chair warm compared to mesh alternatives on hot days.
Key components draw mixed or negative feedback as well. The optional headrest offers multiple points of articulation, but owners report that it slips out of adjustment easily and often pushes the head too far forward. Additionally, the integrated lumbar support feels overly rigid or drifts out of position, and the welded wheel stems limit aftermarket caster customization.
Owners Love
- +Exceptionally versatile armrests with 360-degree adjustability for various postures
- +Heavy-duty, durable frame construction backed by reliable warranty service
- +Adapts well to non-traditional sitting styles and frequent movement
Owners Flag
- −Seat cushion is very firm and thin, causing tailbone pain and leg numbness for many
- −Headrest slips out of position easily and can force the head too far forward
- −Upholstered fabric and foam retain heat and lack mesh breathability
- −Welded caster stems restrict replacing the OEM wheels
"The Gesture is built like it wants to outlive me."
After 6–12 Months
Over months and years of daily use, the frame and heavy mechanical parts hold up exceptionally well. However, the seat foam remains uncompromisingly firm or degrades over time, worsening tailbone discomfort for sensitive users. Fabric and vinyl under the seat cushion are prone to tearing, though Steelcase reliably ships replacement parts without interrogation.
Best for
Active sitters who constantly change postures and prioritize best-in-class armrest positioning.
Not for
Sitters who want a soft, plush seat cushion or cool mesh ventilation for long workdays.
